Structured around the Cambridge-Union debating style, this course breaks down the art of argumentation and persuasion. Working off of a foundation of voice, speech, and diction, our students will go on a journey through a variety of age-appropriate and relevant debate topics. From analysing, annotating and emulating famous speeches from the likes of Martin Luther King, Jr. and John F. Kennedy, to delivering an opening argument, students will learn how to analyse opposing speeches around often-contentious issues — like gun control — so they can learn how to take the information they are absorbing, determine credibility, read between the lines, analyse it, and then learn how to form and express their own opinions. Using debate and group discussions, we teach students the art of organising and articulating ideas, structuring and supporting arguments, listening and countering – all skills honed and championed at Cambridge University.

The Cambridge Union Society, also known as the Cambridge Union, is a debating and free speech society in Cambridge, England, and the largest society in the University of Cambridge. Founded in 1815, it is the oldest continuously running debating society in the world. In the past the Cambridge Union has hosted such great figures as Bill Gates, Stephen Hawkins, and the current Dalai Lama, and it continues to provide students with the opportunity to meet and question the people that shape our world. The Union’s public debates and guest speakers continue to generate passionate student engagement. Its debate competition remains the largest and most prestigious in the world, operating in over 16 countries worldwide.
